Ensuring Fairness: At the Crossroads of Equity and Economic Considerations in Precision Medicine

Tuesday, March 26 | 12 p.m. ET | Virtual

Speaker: Kate Saylor, PhD
Fellow, Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications (ELSI) of Genetics and Genomics,
Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania

Efforts to expand access to genomic health and precision medicine have resulted in a proliferation of screening programs for healthy adult populations across the nation. Issues of fairness and equity abound in medicine and are a critical component of assessing implementation of these genomic health and precision medicine efforts. But how can programs such as genomic screening ensure equitable access within a healthcare system that is already characterized by massive health disparities and barriers to equitable access? When and how should cost-effectiveness be considered when designing screening programs and their offerings? How can cost-effectiveness models incorporate justice, equity and inclusion? In this seminar session, we will explore these questions and the overall relationship between equity and economic considerations in precision medicine.

ClinGen Somatic Cancer and VICC Virtual Molecular Tumor Board Case Series

Tuesday, September 27, 2022 | 11 am – 12 pm ET | Virtual

Therapy-related neoplasms are recognized as a late effect of genotoxic exposure (cytotoxic chemotherapy or irradiation as a treatment for primary malignancy) or complication after solid organ transplant or treatment of autoimmune disorder. The importance of recognition of this type of neoplasms in oncology testing will be discussed in this session through a series of representative cases. These illustrative cases will demonstrate the utility of various axillary testing types in identification of markers associated with specific prognosis in this type of cancer and treatment options.

This workshop is for all medical and healthcare professionals and researchers interested in understanding cancer genomic testing and somatic and germline variant interpretation methods. This series is presented as a collaboration between ClinGen Somatic, VICC, and the ACMG consortia.

Workshop: Realizing the Potential of Genomics across the Continuum of Precision Health Care

Wednesday, October 12, 2022 | 10:30 am – 6 pm ET | Virtual

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize and conduct a public workshop to examine how genomic data are used in health care settings and to identify opportunities for advancement of precision health care delivery. The overarching goal of the workshop is to examine strategies to ensure that genomic applications are responsibly and equitably adopted to benefit populations as well as individuals over time.
