SUMMARY:The Promise and Challenges of Implementing Pharmacogenomics to Improve Population Health
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 14 | 12-1 p.m. ET | Online \nCDC Webinar: The Promise and Challenges of Implementing Pharmacogenomics to Improve Population Health: Where Are we Heading with Preemptive Pharmacogenomic Screening? \nIndividual variability in drug response efficacy or safety is becoming an increasing problem globally\, given the growing population of older adults. Reasons for this variability include genomic factors\, an area of study called pharmacogenomics. With genotyping technologies now widely available and decreasing in cost\, implementing pharmacogenomics into clinical practice is widely viewed as an initial step in mainstreaming genomic medicine. \nThis seminar will review recent developments in the field of pharmacogenomics and the ongoing challenges in equitable translation of discoveries into clinical practice and public health programs. \nSpeaker: \nProfessor Sir Munir Pirmohamed\, MB ChB (Hons)\, PhD\, FRCP\, FRCP(E)\, FFPM\, FRSB\, FBPhS\, FMedSci\nDavid Weatherall Chair of Medicine and National Health Service Chair of Pharmacogenetics\nDirector\, Centre for Drug Safety Science and Wolfson Centre for Personalised Medicine\nInstitute of Systems\, Molecular and Integrative Biology (ISMIB)\nUniversity of Liverpool \nPlease note: registration is required. Visit the CDC Genomics & Precision Health event page to learn more and sign up.

SUMMARY:We Screen Newborns Don’t We? Progress in DNA-based Population Screening
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, May 18 | 10 – 11 a.m. ET | Online\n \nRapid advances and decreasing costs of human genome sequencing technologies are accelerating the integration of genomics into clinical practice. Although genomic sequencing has demonstrated utility as an indication-based diagnostic tool for certain diseases\, the full potential of DNA sequencing for population-level screening is yet to be realized. DNA-based population screening has enormous potential to identify people with underlying genetic predisposition to serious diseases such as cancer and heart disease\, who represent 1–2% of the population. Early detection\, disease prevention\, and timely treatment can improve health outcomes and equity\, and usher in a new era of precision public health. \nLearn more and register for this webinar on the CDC Genomics and Precision Health website. \nSpeakers: \nJonathan S. Berg\, MD\, PhD\nBryson Distinguished Professor\, Genetics and Medicine\nUniversity of North Carolina\nChapel Hill\, North Carolina \nLaura Milko\, PhD\nAssistant Professor\, Genetics\nUniversity of North Carolina\nChapel Hill\, North Carolina

SUMMARY:Coronary Heart Disease\, Family History and Public Health: From Familial Hypercholesterolemia to Elevated Lipoprotein A
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, April 27 | 11 am-12 p.m. ET | Online\nCDC Webinar: Coronary Heart Disease\, Family History and Public Health: From Familial Hypercholesterolemia to Elevated Lipoprotein A\n \nHeart disease remains the number one cause of death in the United States and around the world. In addition to known risk factors for heart disease\, family history plays an important role. In the past decade\, major advances have occurred at the intersection of genomics\, heart disease and public health. Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH)\, a genetic disorder of cholesterol metabolism affecting millions of people\, has emerged as public health genomics priority for preventing premature morbidity and mortality from heart disease. In addition\, elevated lipoprotein (a) (Lp(a)) increases the risk of coronary heart disease\, occur in 1 in 5 people\, have a strong genetic basis\, and accentuate the cardiovascular risk from FH and other risk factors. \nThis seminar will explore advances in FH and Lp(a) and the emerging clinical and public health approaches to reducing the burden of cardiovascular disease using genetics and family history. \nPlease note: registration is required. Visit the CDC’s website to learn more and sign up.
